Question: Vet techs recommended declawing?
I took my kitten to the vet today for her last round of boosters and her rabies shot.

When I came out of the exam room, one of the vet techs mentioned the price of declawing to someone. My boyfriend looked at me & I told him that I’m not having her declawed! Both of the technicians recommended it. Their reasoning was “otherwise she’ll be tearing up your furniture”.

I have always been strongly against declawing. I believe it’s unnecessary mutilation for convenience. I have seen firsthand how declawing can make a cat aggressive. My boyfriend thinks it’s perfectly fine and insists we have it done. I am not going to allow anyone to mutilate MY cat for ANY reason!!

Am I wrong? I was kind of shocked and embarrassed when both vet techs suggested it. I am firm in my beliefs but am starting to wonder if my argument is valid…

Opinions?

MY vet refuses to do it, claiming it’s mutilation. The only exceptions is if the paw is crushed or tumors are present on the bones.

Don’t use the vet if you have qualms about them recommending unnecessary proceedures.

Question: Risks of declawing a cat?
My parents got a bunch of new furniture after our cat scratched up all other furniture.

I walk into the kitchen and my parents tell me that they are declawing my cat and when I tried to protest they just talked over me telling me “I wouldn’t understand” and that “They are tired of having scratched up furniture”

The thing is that he is MY cat, and I was the one who took care of him when he was little (he was a stray) and I’m still the one who takes care of him.

They refused to listen to me and are telling me that he is to stay in the garage for two days until the appointment to declaw him.

What are the risks of declawing a cat?

If it helps, my cat is about 1 and a half years old.
My parents also refuse to do the plastic nail tips. They say that their nails grow too fast and that they don’t constantly want to be replacing the tips when they fall off.

Declawing is a very bad decision for your cat especially since it’s a grown cat. I volunteer in a shelter and lots of declawed cats get turned in because they develop bad habits like biting and not using the litter box. Declawing removes the cat’s defenses and although you may have every intention of keeping them inside, you can’t guarantee they won’t escape or be expelled from the house due to natural disaster. Declawing is illegal in 23 countries cited as animal cruelty and all major cat and animal welfare organizations in the US and Canada strongly oppose it. It is a major surgery which involves removing the first joint of the toe. Many cats can’t walk properly after surgery and are in pain for the rest of their lives. There are plenty of alternatives you can use to deter your cats from inappropriate scratching. Here is a great website with lots of info on declawing and alternatives that work. Mutilation of cats is unwarranted if you find the right “cure” for the scratching. It could be as simple as using double sided tape on the spots they like to scratch.

Question: Why do so many people think declawing a cat or sending it to the pound are their only options?
I am just disgusted by the amount of people I’ve seen on here say, If I don’t declaw my cat’s it’s gonna have to go to the pound because it’s claws are ruining my furniture. What ever happened to taking the time to clip their nails and training them to scratch cat tree’s instead of furniture, or even using soft claws to cap their nails?
Actually I’m disgusted even more by the amount of people who say, well “well my husband and I have really expensive furniture and we really don’t want the cat to damage it or harm it so we opted to declaw the cat and protect our furniture”.
SO YOU’RE NOT OK WITH YOUR FURNITURE BEING HARMED, BUT YOUR OK WITH HARMING AND MUTILATING AN INNOCENT CAT TO PROTECT UPHOLSTERY?
Since when does furniture have more value then an living breathing creature?
I dare, one person on here to name on thing declawing does to benefit the CAT..
It does nothing to benefit the cat, actually it only benefits their owners and their selfishness and laziness.
I mean it amputates all of their toes down to the first knuckle and maims them for life. It is known to cause severe arthritis, serious infection and to seriously alter who your cat is for the rest of their life. 80% of shelter cat’s are cat’s who have been declawed, who’s personalities have changed because of chronic pain and a multitude of other things, and who were then abandoned by the people who mutilated them because they don’t want to deal with their newly accumulated behavioral issues.

HOW CAN ANYONE CHOSE TO CUT OFF A CAT’S TOES IN ORDER TO PROTECT THEIR FURNITURE, WHAT ABOUT PROTECTING THE CAT FROM A LIFETIME OF ISSUES AND CHRONIC PAIN??
I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE, WE PUT THE WELL BEING AND HAPPINESS OF A LIVING BREATHING ANIMAL OVER THE WELL BEING OF OUR FURNITURE!
Answer me this as well, why are people so quick to take the easy way out,? I’m sure declawing a cat will save them the time and effort of having to trim the cat’s nails and train them how to use a scratching post, but why is is ok to cut of a cat’s toes for our convenience and laziness?

If you can’t be bothered to put in the time and effort your cat needs, that give it to someone who does, instead of mutilating it.
And before anyone says I don’t know the hassle of having to deal with clawed cats….I HAVE TWO CATS, AND THEY HAVE ALL OF THEIR CLAWS, AND THEY ARE TRAINED TO ONLY SCRATCH THEIR CAT TREES.
I VALUE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE AND WELL BEING OVER THE WELL BEING OF MY FURNITURE.

I completely agree with you. People who do that are a waste. I’m a person who like animals better than people, so anyone who purposely causes pain to their pet (cat dog or lizard) is a complete loser!!!!!
